Back to Han Ba Tang

Restaurant: Han_Ba_Tang Toronto

Nelson @Han_Ba_Tang: Drinks are a strength here, but Kitty couldn't drink so she had a virgin pina colada. I decided it to keep it simple and just have a Sapporo.
But H on my recommendation tried the infused soju. This looks delicious and I bet it was delicious if my last visit was any indication.
Kalbi taco ($13 for 3) with grilled kalbi, onion, red bell pepper, green onion, deep fried onion. These are decent and they kept the spicy sauce on the side. It was juicy overall, but I felt like it could have used a bit more meat.
Tofu Kimchi with braised pork belly ($10) contains tofu, sauteed kimchi, braised pork belly and tomato. The tofu on the bottom is hard and although a creative dish I didn't think the ingredients went together that well. Still ok tasting though and definitely looks striking.
Spoon pizza ($11) with mashed Korean sweet yam and potato, mozzarella cheese, mushroom, and home made tomato sauce. This is one of my favourites. The yam is delicious and goes perfectly in pizza form. The sauce is tomatoey and spicy at the same time. This is definitely a keeper.
Kimchi fries (Large for $15) has pan fried kimchi, potato fries, herb mayo, chopped scallion and house made gravy. I really liked the wasabi mayo and it adds a nice flavour to everything even though it's very nontraditional. Overall, the many flavours in this dish makes it delicious. I especially love the salty tortilla chips on the bottom absorbing everything. If anything though, it could use a little more of its namesake: kimchi.
Spicy Seafood Soup (Large $15 with added noodles $3) with shrimp, mussel, calamari, blue crab and mixed vegetable. Once again this soup is so extremely flavourful with a strong seafood flavour component next to the strong Korean spice. Last time had even more flavour as I remember it though. Lots of seafood inside, but the one thing I was disjointed was that the noodles were just instant noodles. It has the potential for so much more.
Mac and Gochujang with baby octopus ($10) with macaroni, baby octopus, onion, green bell pepper, cheddar, mozzarella cheese and house made extra spicy sauce. This was a bit disappointing as I thought it would make a great dish. Not sure exactly what was missing, but it didn't have enough of an impact to make a strong impression. Maybe because the sauce was sweet and spicy, it was totally not what I was expecting as a mac & cheese.

Overall creative dishes and good food with excellent drinks. A bit pricey, but good for a treat.
