Casa de Estoi Breakfast

Restaurant: Portugal

Nelson: After trying to check into the hotel late at night and finding no one present at the hotel we were worried. Eventually a cab driver was able to call the hotel and ask someone to check us in. Apparently the person was eating dinner (9:30PM). We are total tourists and have no idea how the times work in Portugal. Anyway, the next morning we ate at the included breakfast.

Sponge cake or pão-de-ló in Portuguese. What a nice way to start the day! I had a Portuguese nanny when I was growing up and she frequently made this sponge cake in our home exactly like this. It took me back.

It seems every Portuguese breakfast has similar components, which include bread, some cold cut and cheese. One of my favourite things about breakfasts in Portugal is the freshly squeezed orange juice that was present at virtually every single breakfast.

One other note: if you travel to Europe, always make sure to buy sunscreen before you go, because it is crazy expensive over there.
