Chef Joe Youkhan's Tasting Spoon
Nelson @ChefJoeYoukhan: Having food trucks outside a convention is a great idea. Helps the fixed location handle the extra people and gives patrons more choices. Plus it's LA and the weather is beautiful all the time. For my first lunch I tried this food truck serving global comfort food. He had a diverse menu with meatball parmigiano burgers, lobster+brie cheese panini, asian chicken salad, crispy shrimp sandwich, etc. I felt like trying the BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich ($9) with slaw. I love having the slaw in the pulled pork sandwich and this one was delicious. Each component was outstanding, with a smokey flavour to the pulled pork, a sweet brioche bun and the slaw that balances it all out. Yum!
I also dad the Parmigiano sweet potato fries ($5) with Aioli dipping sauce on the side. The light dusting of the parmesan really makes a big taste difference (and probably increases the salt by the same large amount). The mayo was also excellent and went well with the deep fried fries.
Everything was done really well and tasted delicious. I suppose part of the appeal of a food truck is concentrating on a few really great items and making them shine. Although I only tasted two items, Chef Joe Youkhan achieves this goal spectacularly.
