Persimmon Sushi

Restaurant: Japan

Nelson @ Nara: Once again checking out the local specialty, which is sushi wrapped in persimmon leaves. Persimmon leaves are wrapped around rice and this is topped with some cured fish, including from left to right (mackarel, salmon and eel?) for ¥280/$3.25 each. The leaf itself didn't have a very strong flavour.

Surprisingly the salmon had a very strong wasabi flavour yet no wasabi was anywhere to be found.

The mackerel is cured/smoked and had the typical mackerel fishy flavour.

The eel was on red rice and you can see the pickled vegetable peeking out in this shot, which I liked a lot.

So something different and unique, but overall not that much tastier than regular sushi. You have to like cured fish to really like this. And salt.
