Punalu'U Bake Shop & Kealia Ranch Store
Nelson @ Southernmost Bakery in USA: Snacking on our road trip, this bake shop was highly recommended for their sweetbreads. Guava on the left, traditional in the middle and taro on the right. This is the sample box and we had quite a bit to "taste". But we did end up buying some, starting with top left, Mango Sugared Malasadas, top right, Taro Sugared Malasadas, bottom right Lilikoi (Passion fruit) Glazed Malasada and finally apple filled Malasadas. Not sure why we would get the apple one as that is a pretty standard North American fruit and appropriately it was the least interesting. The taro, not surprisingly, didn't have a strong taste and maybe it was because our palate was already influenced. The Mango was ok as well. But once again, the lilikoa was a taste explosion. The icing had such an intense flavour which I have never tasted before. So good!
We also grabbed a mango shake on our way out which was perfectly thick and tasty for this hot day.
Lastly, yet another snack on is some famous Shaved Ice beside the road at Kealia Ranch Store. We got half coconut and half lilikoa. This saved ice was huge and at this point we hadn't seen the fresh lilikoa, so we didn't know what the seeds were. But both flavours were excellent and extremely fresh tasting. It really hit the spot on such a hot day.
