Astoria Shish Kebob House
Nelson @ Mississauga: On Urbanspoon this is consistently near the top of the rankings for a Mississauga restaurant, but most importantly, I wanted to go someplace with a patio as we were experiencing an Indian summer at the time. And what goes best with a Patio? Beer of course! This is a Greek beer called Mythos, and to me it tasted like any other generic domestic beer. But sure was refreshing!
The salad included was good because the feta on top was plentiful and very fresh. This is a truly good Greek salad and the cheese really makes it. The bread wasn't anything special, but we needed some for later that night and when I tried to order a loaf to take home they informed me that they were running low and couldn't spare any.
Kitty tried the Mousaka, ground beef layered in eggplant, potatoes and baked under bechamel sauce served with rice. Unfortunately it wasn't that good and not that fresh. Something was missing for this dish as I have had much better ones. The rice was tasty though.
I had the pork Souvlaki on a pita garnished with tzatziki, tomatoes and onions. The pork was fatty in a good way making the meat very very pleasantly moist, yet packing a smokey flavour from the charred outsides. The garlicky tzatziki really went well with the meat, not to mention the tomato and onion. A classic dish done well.
I would come back here if I was ever hankering for some family style Greek food. The fact that it is so close to where I live is a bonus.
