dre @ MS Zuiderdam: I saved the best for last... the Dessert Extravaganza! I kid you not, I did not make up this name, but I love how Holland America has totally catered this scrumptious display of goodies to me, even down to the name! Because the average age of the patrons on this boat is probably 70, there was no midnight dessert buffet. Instead, there was a 9:30 pm dessert buffet haha
The cooks and pastry chefs spent a good part of the week preparing for this night. They baked vast amounts of breads, pastries, cakes. They carved fruits and vegetables for decorations. I think what impressed me the most were the two carvings of chocolate - one of a castle and the other of the Eiffel Tower. I believe there were two versions of everything for the two sides of the pool that they were displayed. Amazing!
I was overwhelmed by all the displays and couldn't decide on what to eat! I limited myself to only three things - cheesecake piece, a mocha white chocolate cake and a chocolate mouse. The chocolate mouse was the best tasting and the cutest looking!
What a great cruise! I would recommend Holland America Line for its food quality, variety of selection, and appropriate portion size. I would NOT recommend Holland America if you're looking for activities and parties on the boat. Overall, this was a very relaxing trip. I think I gained 10 pounds at one point during the cruise, but at the end, I netted four pounds over.
