Joey Don Mills

Restaurant: Joey Toronto

dre @ Don Mills and Lawrence: Dara, Gerald and I met up at Joey at the Shops on Don Mills. I've never been here before and was impressed by how nice the shopping area was. Of course, since it's in Toronto, it would probably be super dead in the winter when it's cold. However, with the great summer we've been having this year, there were plenty of people walking around and eating outside. We grabbed a table on the patio, which is located upstairs. Very nice atmosphere!

I think they purposely gave us the male waiter because Dara and I had gotten there first. I'm sure the female waitresses get assigned to the male-dominant table. Gerald was disappointed that we got a (cute) male waiter.

I ordered the Ahi Tuna Club - grilled rare tuna loin with smoked bacon, red pepper relish, arugula and panko onion rings served with fries. Yes, I ordered a fish sandwich! The sandwich on a whole was very good. I ate just the fish to see if the toppings and condiments just masked the taste, but I was pleasantly surprised to find it not bad tasting. It tasted like fish, but the texture was more meat-like. The onion ring in the sandwich made it spectacular.

Dara got the Ahi Tuna Salad - seared rare ahi tuna, mango, amorosa tomatoes, fresh mint, peanuts, crispy noodles with a chili lime dressing. It looked really good.

Gerald got the Lobster Ravioli - stuffed with atlantic lobster, crab, shrimp and ricotta cheese in a lemon dill cream sauce. I was eying that dish on the menu, but the ricotta cheese turned me off. I tried 2 raviolis and liked how the cheese wasn't strong at all! When Gerald ordered, I flashed a smile to the waiter asked him to throw in some extra bonus raviolis for fun, not expecting much. When it came out, the waiter said it did look bigger than usual. Of course, he could be just saying that, but the dish was pretty big.

For dessert, we shared the Individually Baked Apple Pie - brown sugared apples, toasted almonds, hand-folded puff pastry, caramel sauce and maple ice cream. It looked really impressive, but the taste was generic.
