Deer Meat in the Gorge

Restaurant: Taiwan

Nelson @ Toroko Gorge: We were touring the gorge on a semiprivate tour and it took us to this stop with several restaurant choices. We didn't really know how to order, so we selected some items. We knew we ordered deer meat though.

The first picture is of some sticky rice. This was cooked in some bamboo that you open to eat. Interesting way of serving/cooking the rice, but there was not a lot inside.

The turnips were ok and the tofu dish looked big, but was actually a little small. It was difficult to eat all the contents in the soup.

We didn't realize that a lot of the orders were meals and came with sides, so it was a little awkward sharing individual meals family style. The pork was decent, but the sides were only ok.

The next picture is of the deer meat. Almost like pork, just a little tougher and a little leaner. There was no gamey taste, so they must have cooked it quite well. We took a risk, but it turned out to be the best dish we ordered.

Lastly is a beef vermicilli dish. Beef isn't that great in Taiwan and I don't like vermicilli.
