Shanghai Style Food in Taiwan
Restaurant: Taiwan
Nelson: My dad brought us here with some cousins. It was a nice Shanghai restaurant. I really liked how they included the yummy appetizers. The bamboo shoots on the left were a revelation. I've never had it so fresh before, because the stuff in Canada is always canned. They were so good that I kept on seeking this out for the rest of the trip. On the right is kao fu (烤麩), which is vegetarian fried gluten. This was also pretty good. The vinegary cucumber is a staple at home, so I also enjoyed this.
Next is a cold dish, pork which is preserved and chilled. It's called 肴肉 in Chinese. I enjoy eating this dish as it has a unique taste and texture, not to mention colour. I also rarely eat it, but should look out for it more.
Next is a shrimp with white lotus dish. I don't eat white lotus often stir fried, so this was unique as well.
Of course we ordered xiao long bao. They are bigger here and were decent, but not as good as DingTaiFung.
We ordered a nian gao dish, in this case a snow vegetabale nian gao, 雪 菜 年 糕. It looked really good, but was a tad disappointed with it. It still tasted decent, but just not as great as I was expecting. Not sure what exactly was missing.
For more carbs, next one is noodles in a shrimp soup. I only got a small portion of this and it tasted a little plain. I don't like dried small shrimp in general, so it wasn't that enjoyable.
Next is an eel dish cooked with a vegetable that had a strong taste. Not sure what the vegetable is, but this was a good dish. Eel has a firm yet a little bit of a flaky texture. It tastes like a fish, nothing too extraordinary.
More xiao long bao, this time with vegetables inside.
Lastly is the red cooked pork with green onion. I like this dish, but I've had better pork cooked this way. I've eaten this so many times throughout my life I know what to expect, but the unique thing with this dish is that it was served with so much green onion. It was a nice twist and I ended up eating a lot of green onion.
Overall a good restaurant and I had a very enjoyable meal. My dad, who usually doesn't pick restaurants did a good job this time.
